Dia De Los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) started back in pre-Columbian times. It is believed by many that this is the time when those who have passed away are allowed to return to earth to visit with their families and friends. On November 1st and 2nd, ceremonies and festivals honor those who have died.

Dia de los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico by decorating shop windows, cleaning and decorating the cemetery, creating special flower wreaths, making toys and figures featuring the famous calaveras, and by installing tianguis (special markets) to sell the necessary items for the ofrendas. Zenpasuchitl, a type of marigold, is the traditional flower of Dia De Los Muertos and altars are often covered with the bright orange petals. The baker, cook, florist and artist are all needed for the Days of the Dead.

The preparation for the celebration begins during the last week of October. Special dishes are cooked for the festivals, and are offered to both living and dead friends and relatives who visit.
